Yaks are large animals related to cows. Yaks survive in extremely cold places and live in the high plateaus of Mongolia and Tibet where they are looked after by nomadic herders.
The fibre that comes from the undercoat is soft, fine (17 to 19 microns), and very warm, it also has a better lustre than wool. Yak is an affordable substitute to cashmere. The fibre is short and is best spun like cotton.
